Consultation Process for Custom Made Jewellery
These are informative and will help you decide what you can do with your old jewellery or what is achievable with a new piece. Our aim is that they are stress free, fun and affordable.
There are a few steps we follow when making a new piece of jewellery or remodelling an old one.
- You can begin the process with a phone call for a chat or an email. Then if you wish, you can make an appointment.
- You may have a design in mind and if not we can help you with that and give you an idea of the costs involved. Give us a budget that you have in mind to help us both stay on track.
- The next step is for us to weigh and check any old gold you may have for crediting and remove any stones that you may supply in old mounts. These are then cleaned and weighed and measured.
- Once you have decided on a design we will then either hand-carve or CAD (computer model) or print a wax for you to try.
We can source diamonds and coloured gemstones to suit your requirements and budget. Our diamonds are sourced from trusted suppliers and we only use diamonds that are conflict free.
- Once the wax is completed we can sit the stones on it to give you a good idea of what it will be like in metal. We can email you pictures of it or ideally come in and try it on.
This is the time to make any changes.
Once this is done and you are happy with it then we may ask for a deposit of 20 %.
- We will then make your piece in metal and set it.
- Once finished we may advise that it is valued. We do not do this on site but can organise this to be done for you.
- You then come, try it, love it, pay for it and take it home or if you can’t come in then we can courier it to you.
Making a ring whether it is an engagement, wedding or fashion ring for someone should not be stressful. If you don’t know what you want we can certainly offer help with designs and ideas. We are sure we can find a style that will suit and ‘hopefully’ within the confines of your budget.
We can source and supply almost any stones needed but we are also very happy to make a piece of jewellery using your stones or metal.
Remodelling has become a big part of what we do and this is the most fun for me. Everyone has jewellery that is old fashioned, or an ex’s or inherited or is broken and worn out. It is all usable in one way or another. A consultation can take half an hour to one hour. I want to get to know the client a little and then I will do ‘a lot’ of talking.……
We are doing more consultations via email or phone. Not everyone lives close by or can take time off work to come during working hours. Nowadays with modern technology this is very doable. Once we have established what you want we are able to create the design in wax. You can try this on your finger or if it’s a pendant then on your chain. This is beneficial for us both. You will be able to check that it is what you wanted and that it is a good fit. We can be sure that we are on the right track and make any changes necessary in the wax before we make it in metal and we can also check our estimates at this stage. Everyone tells us they love seeing it in wax as it takes a lot of the stress out of having something made.
e.g this wax had the stones sitting on the top so the client could check how it sat on the finger and that it was what she had in mind.
Once you think we are good to go then we will then make it in metal. It can take anything from 3 -5 weeks to make a ring to the finished stage …..but as they say ‘all good things are worth waiting for’.
If you are worried about anything ‘at all’ then you can always see it again in the metal before we set it. It is still possible to make changes at this stage.
Then we set it and this is the exciting part as we are on the home straight….
Nothing compares to the finished article. They still gives us goosebumps when they are finished.
There are never two exactly the same and when the client comes and says ‘WOW’ it is way nicer than thought it would be, then we am a very happy.
When a client comes to us for the first time I always ask them to bring their entire jewellery box with them, regardless of how many or few pieces they may have. This gives us a good idea of what they already have, what they like and what style they prefer and then we can offer suggestions for the pieces they no longer like or in many cases they may have inherited and are either worn out or just not practical to wear.
Katie Laurie (McVean) ‘promised’ she would not wear her engagement ring every day when she was riding. Luckily I didn’t believe her and we made it a little chunkier here and there without it being too noticeable.
Husband Jackson’s a cowboy so his had to be a rope design and we made it nice and chunky so he could wear it all the time.
Some clients may wish to remodel their old pieces into a more modern style and this is fine but there some just cannot bring themselves to do this. This is when we can be a little creative and just make a few ‘minor’ alterations. E.g a brooch can be framed and made into a pendant. Most are more likely to wear a pendant than a brooch. Should the next generation decide they wanted it back as a brooch then this is not a problem.
This pendant was made up of all the little pieces that were too precious to melt down or leave sitting in the jewellery box unloved. Another old cufflink, nana’s key, aunties cross. A very sentimental little collection.
This gorgeous antique diamond necklace was a family heirloom that had not been worn for many years. Without changing the original settings it is now a stunning pendant and now worn more often.
This ring was just not cutting the mustard as the client was too rough and it was quite delicate and she really wanted white gold or a two tone look. Problem solved. It is now much tougher and two tone.
We could go on and on and onbet we just want to show you some examples of what we can do and what is possible if you too have jewellery that you don’t wear.
Geoff and I have now worked together for over 30 years and so we have a reasonable understanding. We have an amazing team working with us. We have a small open workshop and so during any consultation I can call upon him to check on the technicalities of any design.
We are fortunate to have the skills to produce some gorgeous pieces and often without it costing a fortune. Clients often comment that they had put off coming as they had expected it to cost a lot more.
